Kathleen Fenton’s exhibit, “Portraits of People, Places and Trees,” will feature over 30 pastel paintings, work spanning a decade. She chooses to work in pastels because, as almost pure color pigments, they are especially suited to a vivid expression of color as it manifests in the natural world.
Aiming at a kind of elemental portraiture, she is inspired by places of interface, where the elements meet in dynamic interchange, and by trees and a sense of the nature beings within them, and by rock forms and faces. Her work also includes human portraits, from life rather than photographs, using color to try to build an expression of a person’s unique individuality.
